Reader terms · 10 October 2026
Buying and reading a book.
The House of Lit is operated by Inkwell Independent Books Ltd. These terms explain your ebook purchase without limiting your statutory consumer rights.
Your purchase
You purchase a digital ebook for personal use, not copyright or redistribution rights. Do not resell, publicly share or upload the files. The displayed price is in pounds sterling; Stripe shows the final total, applicable taxes and any available currency conversion before payment.
Files and compatibility
Available formats depend on the author’s submission: EPUB, PDF or both. Word manuscripts are converted to EPUB. EPUB requires a compatible ebook reader; PDF requires a PDF reader. Check the available formats before buying. Your purchase includes all supplied formats without a second charge.
Delivery
For new purchases, downloads become available after Stripe confirms payment and the required contractual confirmation has been accepted for sending. Keep your purchase reference and receipt. If a download is missing, damaged or inaccessible, contact us so we can help restore access. A book withdrawn from new sales remains downloadable by existing buyers while its files are retained.
Ratings and reviews
Literary assessments are generated by our assessment algorithm and can be mistaken. Reader ratings aggregate private questionnaire responses accepted as credible evidence of reading; this does not guarantee every response is genuine. Rankings describe assessed responses, not a promise that you will enjoy a book.
Problems, cancellation and refunds
See our refund policy. Where you expressly consent to immediate digital supply and acknowledge the consequences, the ordinary 14-day cancellation right ends when downloading begins, provided the legal requirements are met. There is no automatic change-of-mind refund after that point; discretionary goodwill refunds may be offered. Faulty, missing or misdescribed digital content remains subject to statutory consumer remedies. Send requests using the contact form.
